Water's important role in how your body works

Water helps nearly every part of the human body function. Considering that our bodies are 55-75% water depending on the ratio of body fat to muscle, understanding water's important role in the body can be a fountain of health. The following are just some of the things water does in the body:

  • Water is required for expiration
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Carries nutrients and oxygen to all cells in the body
  • Moistens oxygen for breathing
  • Protects and cushions vital organs
  • Helps to convert food into energy
  • Helps body absorb nutrients
  • Removes waste
  • Cushions joints

 Water facts

  • The human brain is 75% water - moderate dehydration can cause headaches and dizziness
  • Blood is 92% water.
  • Muscles are 75 % water
  • Bones are 22% water

Water is vital for body temperature regulation, therefore fluid replacement is vital. During summer when the temperature increases, your body requires even more fluid to maintain it's normal body temperature.Even when there is zero intake of water there are always unavoidable losses.

Water In: Solid Foods (1000ml), Metabolic Water (300ml) and Beverages (1000ml)

Water Out : Evaporation (min 1000ml), Sweat ???, Faeces (100+ ml) Urine? Dehydration

Remember! Although thirst indicates a lack of fluid, it is not a reliable measure of water need. It is important to pay attention to the signals of water loss and minimise risk of dehydration before thirst sets in. Establishing a strong fluid habit is important for everyone.

  • 1-5% Thirst, vagueness. Discomfort, increased pulse, nausea
  • 6-10% Dizziness, headache, laboured breathing, walking difficulties
  • 11-20% Delirium, twitching, inability to swallow. Severe lack of water, or extreme dehydration, when more than 1/2 to 2 litres of fluid are lost can be life threatening.

 Eight ways to be Water Wise

  • Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. By the time you feel thirsty, you have probably already lost two or more cups of your total body water composition.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Convenience is a must, so carry a bottle of water with you as you commute to work, run errands or enjoy a day at the beach. While at work, keep a bottle of water on your desk, or visit the office water cooler and take a water break rather than a coffee break.
  • Once you start exercising, drink water throughout your workout. Keep a bottle of water with you and take frequent water breaks.
  • Don’t underestimate the amount of fluids lost from perspiration. Following a workout, you need to drink two cups of water for each 500 gms lost.
  • Start and end your day with water. Your body loses water while you sleep, so drink a serving before bed and again when you wake up.
  • Common colds and the flu frequently lead to dehydration. Keep a large bottle of water next to your bed so you can sip it throughout the day without having to get up.
  • Cool water is the best fluid for keeping hydrated when it’s warm outside. Cool water is absorbed much more quickly than warm fluids and may help to cool off your overheated body. If you’re going to be away from home or outdoors, make sure you keep a bottle of water close by.
  • Make sure your children drink enough water. Children need water to balance their intake of other beverages ?Eespecially during activities. Packing bottled water in a child’s lunch is a healthy habit.

 Water around the World

"A world full of people dying to get a drink"

Population growth, pollution and climate change are likely to combine to produce a drastic decline in the world's water supply in a few decades.

The World Water Development report, says 1.1 billion people, nearly all in developing countries, do not have clean water and 2.4 billion lack proper sanitation. Yet the world has not realized the extent of the problem, or that these figures are likely to worsen remorselessly, says the Unesco-backed report. "Inertia at the leadership level and a world population not fully aware of the scale of the problem" mean the global water crisis will reach unprecedented heights. And that means hunger, disease and death.

The report predicts that by 2050, up to 7 billion people in 60 countries may be short of water. If the right policies are followed this could be reduced to 2 billion people in 48 nations.

The report is intended as an alarm call, published before the World Water Forum in Kyoto, Japan this month, when it is hoped governments and policy-makers will make a new commitment to get to grips with the world water problem. Corporate Water Brands is following closely these developments and in partnership with the ‘Water for Survival?EGroup hopes to contribute to future initiatives aimed at relieving this crisis.

Some Sobering Facts about Water and Sanitation

More than 1.5 billion people do not have access to a safe and adequate water supply. Unless action is stepped up, this number could increase to 2.3 billion by 2025. Of all water on earth, 97.5% is salt water, and of the remaining 2.5% fresh water, some 70% is frozen in the polar icecaps. The other 30% is mostly present as soil moisture or lies in underground aquifers. In the end, less than 1% of the world's fresh water (or about 0.007% of all water on earth) is readily accessible for direct human uses. It is found in lakes, rivers, reservoirs and in underground sources shallow enough to be tapped at affordable cost (2)

If all the earth's water fit in a litre jug, available fresh water would equal just over a tablespoon.

It is estimated that 50% of the world's population lacks access to adequate sanitation

A person can live about a month without food, but only about a week without water

A person needs 4 to 5 litres of water per day to survive

The average American individual uses 100 to 176 litres of water at home each day

The average African family uses about 5 litres of water each day

One billion people must make a three-hour journey on foot each day just to obtain their drinking water

Approximately 60 to 70% of the rural population in the developing world have neither access to a safe and convenient source of water nor a satisfactory means of waste disposal

Water systems fail at a rate of 50% or higher

According to the UN, 20% of the world's population in 30 countries face water shortages. This number is expected to rise to 30% of the world's population in 50 countries in 2025

Some of the world's largest cities, including Beijing, Buenos Aires, Dhaka, Lima, and Mexico City, depend heavily on groundwater for their water supply. It is unlikely that dependence on aquifers, which take many years to recharge, will be sustainable

Poor people in the developing world pay on average 12 times more per liter of water than fellow citizens connected to municipal systems; these poverty-stricken people use less water, much of which is dirty and contaminated

No water, no life"

The lack of  clean safe drinking water is the world's No 1 killer.  To fight this global problem the United Nations has proclaimed the decade 2005 to 2015 as the International Decade for Action, "Water for life".

WHAT REGULATIONS GOVERN BOTTLED WATER?
The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) sets the minimum standards for all types of bottled water. These regulations are set out in the Food Standards Code.

The primary Standard is 2.6.2 "Non-alcoholic Beverages & Brewed Soft Drinks". Bottlers must also comply with all the other requirements of the Code including "Labelling and Other Information Requirements" (Standard 1.2), Contaminants and Residues (Standard 1.4), Microbiological and Processing Requirements (Standard 1.6) and the Food Safety regulations (Standard 3.1).
