NEW ZEALAND JUICE & BEVERAGE AWARDS

The Best of New Zealand’s Juices and Beverages are …

(9 November 2012) Once again the annual New Zealand Juice and Beverage Awards were a showcase of the “ Best of ” a great range in exciting new products and old favourites.

It took the judges – both adult consumers and young adults, approx 4 hours to decide the winners in each of 12 different categories from a record number of entries received for this year’s awards.

Categories reinstituted from previous years included a Best of Tea Based Beverage, Best Water/Near Water Beverage and Best Milk Based Beverage.

Products were judged under blind code on appearance, aroma and flavour and then in their packs to determine the overall appeal. The appeal of the package and brand is never to be underestimated – especially with the young adults!

Trends in this years’ awards were for products using either less sugar or other sugar substitutes such as stevia. Natural ingredients were also prominent with some great flavours including peach and nectarine – so like the fresh fruit.

Packaging trends included some innovation in reducing the amount of PET resins in bottles and caps (and thereby reducing the company’s carbon footprint) and for single serve ready to drink pouch packs – light, colourful with some great graphics.

The awards were judged by an independent panel representing food and packaging technologists, marketers, sports personnel, media and consumers led by Kay McMath and held at the Massey University’s Food Technology department.

Winners in the 2012 awards were revealed at the Association’s conference in Tauranga on Nov 2nd .

Mizone Active Water - Peach from Frucor Beverages Ltd was named Supreme Champion (Large producer), with both adults and teenagers enjoying the delicately flavoured water.

Ti Tonics - Nectarine from Ti Tonics was the Supreme Champion (Small producer) with the judges describing the product as “not too sweet and very refreshing”.

The Youth Choice Award, chosen this year by students of the Albany Senior High School, was also Mizone Active Water - Peach from Frucor Beverages Ltd.

An award this year to recognise Initiative in the industry introduced for the first time last year again went to Coca Cola Amatil Ltd for the development of their blow fill bottle line where bottles are blown just ahead of filling using less resin and more recycled resin resulting in a lighter, cheaper bottle with the same properties.

The Packaging Award went to Charlies Trading Company with their drink pouch for children. Described by the judges as “great for shelf facing display, stunning graphics and both functional and fun for children”.

The awards this year will provide consumers with a great guide for purchasing some of the industry’s best products. NZJBA President James Wilson states:

“We are delighted to be able to deliver to New Zealand consumers a wide range of beverages, something for each occasion and purpose, to suit a range of tastes and flavour preferences, judged to have great appeal for young and older consumers alike."

New Zealand Juice and Beverage Awards attract a record number of entries

(1 October 2010) The annual awards of The New Zealand Juice and Beverage Association have attracted a record number of entries and some new member companies despite the financial climate over the past year. The entries (118 in total) from 8 member companies demonstrated that innovation is alive and well in the industry. Big and smaller producers were well represented on the award dais for products that represented everything from international to local brands and old favourites with some new products.

The awards are judged by an independent panel representing food technologists, marketers, dieticians, sports personnel, media and consumers led by Kay McMath and held at the Massey University’s Food Technology department. Winners in the 2010 awards were revealed at the Association’s conference in Rotorua today.

Keri Apple and Blackcurrant Juice (pictured) from Coca Cola Oceania Ltd was named Supreme Champion, with judges describing it as having a great apple flavour with the old fashioned taste of blackcurrants.

The Youth Choice Award was this year judged by students from Rangitoto College who blind tasted the entries to select their most acceptable beverage. The winner was Fresh Up BIG FIZZ Feijoa Burst from Frucor Beverage. This product also won the New to Market Award.

A growing trend in this years’ entries was the increase in the number of tea based beverages. Iced tea drinks showed an amazing range of flavours from pomegranate and peach to feijoa and limeblossom. Packaging of these products, sophisticated and elegant in glass with excellent graphics, was also positively received.

The event provides the industry with an opportunity to show case its products. NZJBA President James Wilson states “We are delighted to be able to deliver to New Zealand consumers a wide range of beverages, something for each occasion and purpose, to suit a range of tastes and flavour preferences, judged to be high quality by independent experts."
